Unilever fined 2 million yuan for spreading price increase information and disrupting market

In March 2011, Unilever (China) sent supermarkets a notice that its daily chemical products (including Zhonghua toothpaste, Lux, Clear and others) would rise in price from April 1 and publicly said through the media that it would raise prices, triggering consumer rush buying. The National Development and Reform Commission determined that it had spread price increase information and disrupted market price order; the Shanghai Price Bureau fined it 2 million yuan. Unilever suspended the price increases and apologized; it was the first such penalty after the revision of the Provisions on Administrative Penalties for Price Violations.
