SpaceX agrees to acquire nationwide 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management

Reuters reported on 8 October 2026 that Elon Musk's space company SpaceX has reached an agreement to acquire a nationwide portfolio of low-band mobile spectrum licenses — the US-wide 800 MHz low-band spectrum (up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum) held by private equity firm Grain Management — with the deal still requiring approval from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). SpaceX said the added 800 MHz low-band spectrum would fill a key signal-penetration gap for its Starlink Mobile service, enabling a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network, and the company said the deal would clear a major obstacle for Starlink Mobile to become a major US mobile carrier. After the report, shares of AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon fell in after-hours trading amid concerns about increased competition and a potential price war.
