Arbutus Landscaping fined $318,000 over 2023 Edmonton worker death
Arbutus Landscaping Inc. was fined $318,000 after pleading guilty on Aug. 19 to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to the death of a worker who fell through a roof at an Edmonton construction site on Dec. 11, 2023. The fine includes the victim fine surcharge and other charges were withdrawn. Albatross Roofing Ltd. was also charged with OHS offences related to the same fatality, with sentencing set for Sept. 10.

Arbutus Landscaping fined $318,000 over fatal Edmonton roof fall
Calgary-based Arbutus Landscaping Inc. pleaded guilty on Aug. 19 in the Edmonton Court of Justice to a single count under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to establish a system or process to ensure compliance with OHS laws, and was ordered to pay $318,000 in fines. The charge stemmed from the Dec. 11, 2023 death of a worker who fell through a roof during a roof replacement project at an Edmonton construction site. All other charges against the company were withdrawn, and it has 30 days to appeal.
