Cathay Pacific in-flight meals on Nepal route cause food poisoning in 43 passengers
In early January 2025, a total of 43 passengers on two Cathay Pacific flights from Kathmandu, Nepal, to Hong Kong (including CX640) showed symptoms of food poisoning. The Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection judged the symptoms to be consistent with Staphylococcus aureus poisoning, possibly linked to contaminated beetroot salad supplied by Cathay Pacific Catering Services, and instructed suspension of the salad involved; Cathay said laboratory samples from the same batch showed no contamination. Supply of the salad involved was suspended, food handling monitoring and staff training were strengthened; no prosecution was seen.
