Qingyuan Chimelong elephants accused of being forced to 'slide' down mud slope, sparking animal welfare controversy

In February 2025, videos circulated online showing elephants at Qingyuan Chimelong Resort being driven by keepers to slide down a mud slope for visitors to watch, prompting netizens to question forced animal performances and animal abuse. The resort said it was actively making improvements, and local authorities said they would strengthen supervision. In May 2026, Guangzhou Chimelong giant panda "Jiahe" died of heart failure secondary to a pulmonary chlamydia infection; the park suspended displays at the giant panda center and apologized. The cases sparked discussion about animal welfare and performance programs at zoos; no administrative penalty was seen.
