Illegal dumping of cow manure slurry pollutes ponds; staff brucellosis infections raise raw milk safety concerns

China Modern Dairy is a main milk source for Mengniu Telunsu. Since 2012, it has repeatedly been reported for illegally dumping pasture manure and biogas slurry, polluting water sources and farmland; in 2014, its Feidong subsidiary dumped biogas slurry without permission, leaving a pond 'bare of grass,' and was fined RMB 100,000 and given a countywide notice. People's Daily Online reported that employees were found infected with brucellosis every year and that there were loopholes in the quarantine of culled cattle, raising concerns about raw milk safety. Fine RMB 100,000; the penalty was criticized as 'trivial.'
