Inventor David Parsons sues Convatec for up to £366m over Aquacel patent profits

Analytical chemist Dr David Parsons, who worked for FTSE100-listed Convatec Ltd from 1991 until 2023, is suing the medical products company at the UK High Court for compensation of up to £366m under Section 40 of the Patents Act 1977, claiming that patents bearing his name - used in ConvaTec's Aquacel antimicrobial wound dressings - created an 'outstanding' benefit for his employer. Convatec is fighting the claim, arguing compensation is due only for exceptional individual inventions rather than patents considered collectively; the case reached the Court of Appeal this week over the issues to be determined, judgment is likely to be reserved, and a six-week High Court trial is set for 2028.
