  1. 1988

    Wittenoom blue-asbestos exposure

CSR operated blue-asbestos mines at Wittenoom through a subsidiary from 1948 to 1966. Workers, families and other visitors were exposed to crocidolite fibres, and many later developed fatal diseases including mesothelioma and lung cancer. Litigation in the 1980s led to court awards, compensation negotiations and continuing criticism of the company’s safety practices.

  2. 1886

    Coercive labour and plantation deaths

CSR’s nineteenth-century Queensland and Fiji plantation expansion relied on recruited South Sea Islander and other indentured labour. Inquiries documented kidnapping, removals and high mortality among workers, creating a serious historical record of labour exploitation associated with the company’s sugar operations.
