Land compensation protests ahead of Dangote's Lamu refinery launch

    Public backlash

Ahead of the ground-breaking of Dangote's $16bn Lamu oil refinery in Kenya, some local residents took to the streets to demand more compensation for land used for the refinery. The Save Lamu campaign group also said it is concerned about the environmental impact the project could have on the local community and asked for the findings of the environmental impact assessment. Aliko Dangote dismissed the protests as games played by local marketers and international players and disputed the compensation claims, saying the company took only the portion of land it needed from what the government made available.
