Public destruction of rejected Cuban cigars
Zino Davidoff publicly burned more than one hundred thousand Cuban-made cigars that he judged to be below the required quality standard. The incident became a prominent public sign of the dispute between Davidoff and Cubatabaco and preceded the withdrawal of Cuban-made Davidoff products.
Debate over tobacco brand diversification
Public-health researchers have treated the expansion of the Davidoff name into fragrances, watches, leather goods and other luxury categories as a possible example of trademark diversification or brand stretching. The concern is that non-tobacco visibility may help preserve recognition of a tobacco-associated brand where direct tobacco promotion is restricted.
