    Antisemitic membership rules and speeches

The society excluded Jews and women through its membership requirements, defining eligible members as men born into the Christian faith. Antisemitic rhetoric was also expressed in speeches by Clemens Brentano, Achim von Arnim, and Adam Müller. Brentano’s “Philistine speech” associated Judaism with philistinism and used dehumanizing language; he later published it anonymously.
