Austrian diethylene glycol wine scandal
Several Austrian wineries illegally adulterated wine with toxic diethylene glycol to make it seem sweeter and fuller-bodied. The scandal led to stricter wine legislation, stronger official controls and a major repositioning of Austrian wine toward dry, quality-focused production. It predates DAC but is a central historical reason for the system’s regulatory and reputational context.
