San Flaviano and the Permesta conflict
San Flaviano was bombed and sunk in Balikpapan Harbour by a black, unmarked B-26 Invader sent by the CIA as part of covert American support for the Permesta rebellion. Two crew members died. Indonesian and British public statements attributed the attack to Indonesian rebels, despite government awareness of the aircraft’s covert provenance. The incident affected Shell’s tanker operations in Indonesian waters.
