    Mandate Now and safeguarding-policy concerns

Mandate Now questioned the insurer’s possible influence over Church safeguarding policy and raised concerns about conflicts between claims management and survivor protection. Later testimony to IICSA confirmed historical attendance by Ecclesiastical representatives at Church safeguarding committees.

    Bishops’ criticism of Ecclesiastical

Three Church of England bishops wrote to Ecclesiastical criticising advice and practices in historic child-sexual-abuse cases, including what they described as legalistic claims handling. The insurer issued a rebuttal and rejected the picture presented in the letter and earlier review.

Elliott Review and Church abuse-case handling

An independent review led by Ian Elliott criticised an instruction associated with Ecclesiastical to end contact between the Archbishop of Canterbury’s office and a survivor of sexual abuse. The review said the instruction was reckless and inconsistent with Church policy. Ecclesiastical later disputed aspects of the review and said it had not been given an opportunity to contribute adequately.
