Philippine objection to the Filipinos brand name
The Philippine government filed a diplomatic protest against Spain, the European Commission, and Nabisco Iberia over the use of “Filipinos” for cookies and pretzel snacks. Critics, including Heherson Álvarez, argued that the name used Filipino racial identity for commercial purposes and could evoke the product’s dark exterior and light interior. President Joseph Estrada described the brand as an insult on August 26, 1999. The available material does not record a forced name change in Spain; in the Philippines, the cookies are sold as Chiquilin.
