  1. Credit-rating agencies criticized over mortgage-related securities

Fitch and other major rating agencies faced criticism for assigning high ratings to mortgage-related structured products whose risks and subsequent losses were substantially greater than investors expected.

  2. Criticism over mortgage-related structured-finance ratings

Fitch, together with other major credit-rating agencies, was criticized for allegedly understating the risks of mortgage-related securities and collateralized debt obligations before and during the global financial crisis. Some products that received very high ratings later incurred substantial losses. A cited example involved collateralized debt obligations issued by Credit Suisse that had received AAA ratings from Fitch. Fitch also published an early report warning about risks in constant-proportion debt obligations in 2007, showing that its public analysis was not uniformly optimistic across all structured products.
