GEO Group sues California over civil rights law for immigrant detainees
Private prison company GEO Group filed a complaint in federal court challenging California Senate Bill 942, the Civil Detainees' Bill of Rights Act of 2026, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed the prior week and which requires that immigrant and other detainees be afforded privacy, safety, hygienic living conditions, medical, dental and mental health care and other rights. GEO Group filed its complaint the day after the law was signed, arguing that California may not impose its preferred immigration-detention standards on federal detention operations. The law allows the state attorney general to bring civil action against private and public entities that allegedly violate those rights. Representatives for GEO Group, Newsom, Attorney General Rob Bonta and the bill's author did not comment.
