Bre-X mining scandal inspires the film

Gold is loosely based on the Bre-X scandal, in which a purported Indonesian gold discovery collapsed after core samples were found to have been salted. The real-world scandal is an inspiration for the film rather than an incident involving the film’s production or distribution.
