    CDDB licensing and open-source controversy

Gracenote's commercialization of the originally community-contributed CDDB database led to a licensing controversy. Critics objected to new usage requirements, including logo-display provisions and the withdrawal of new licenses for CDDB1 in favor of the incompatible CDDB2 system. Some contributors believed earlier references to the GNU General Public License meant the database should remain open source, while CDDB said the relevant license statement had been made in error.
