    Controversy surrounding the Areal crowdfunding campaign

    West-Games, a studio formed by former GSC personnel, launched a Kickstarter campaign for Areal, presented as a spiritual successor to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The campaign was criticized over alleged use of footage from earlier S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games and screenshots resembling commercially available Unity assets. Kickstarter suspended the campaign shortly before its close, citing guideline violations. GSC later stated that West-Games did not have legal permission to develop a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game because GSC retained the franchise rights.
