1.5T Engine “Oil Level Increase” Incident Triggers Large-Scale Recalls
In early 2018, many owners of Dongfeng Honda CR-V 1.5T vehicles complained that after short trips at low temperatures the oil level rose abnormally and the oil smelled of gasoline. The issue erupted intensively online, owners in Northeast China and other areas collectively defended their rights, and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) summoned Honda. In May 2018 Dongfeng Honda recalled 130,455 CR-Vs, in July it recalled 294,511 Civics, and in August GAC Honda recalled 96,926 Avancier 240TURBO vehicles. Measures included replacing air-conditioning control units and cooling lines, upgrading engine and transmission control programs, and changing the oil. Impact and handling: CR-V sales were temporarily suspended for rectification, and Honda’s brand reputation in China suffered; the manufacturer extended the engine warranty to appease owners. Progress: recalled. Entity involved: Honda Automobile.
