2013 Kwai Tsing container terminal labour dispute: outsourced workers strike for 40 days

On March 28, 2013, employees of several outsourced contractors at Hongkong International Terminals (HIT, under Hutchison Whampoa) launched a strike over pay that had not been adjusted for years, long working hours, and poor conditions for meals and toilet breaks, demanding a wage increase of about 20%. The strike lasted 40 days, with protesters camping outside Cheung Kong Center; terminal operations were seriously affected, making it one of Hong Kong's largest labour disputes in years. The Labour Department presided over five rounds of mediation; on May 6, the outsourced contractors promised a uniform 9.8% pay increase, improved meal and toilet arrangements, and no retaliation against strikers, and the workers returned to work. The Legislative Council gave a reply to questions on the labour dispute.
