William Hulton's role in the Peterloo Massacre
William Hulton, acting as chairman of the Lancashire and Cheshire magistrates, authorized the intervention that dispersed a large reform meeting at St Peter's Field in Manchester. The yeomanry attack killed approximately eighteen people and injured hundreds. Although the government praised Hulton's conduct, the episode made him widely reviled among working-class communities.
