Environmental conflict over the Rhyolite Ridge mine
The proposed mine became a prominent example of the conflict between extracting lithium for electric vehicles and protecting a plant with a very restricted habitat. Federal agencies found that endangered-species listing for Tiehm’s buckwheat was warranted and subsequently proposed protection.

Damage to Tiehm’s buckwheat
A survey reported damage to a large share of Tiehm’s buckwheat plants in the Rhyolite Ridge area. Conservation advocates raised the possibility of deliberate human destruction, while Ioneer denied that the damage was caused by the company or other people. Government-supported analysis later identified rodents as the likely cause, but critics disputed whether the evidence conclusively excluded human activity.
