  1. 2011

    Haulbowline industrial contamination

Decades of dumping created a large waste deposit containing steelmaking residues and chemicals. Later investigations identified serious contamination concerns, including chromium-6 and radioactive material, making the former plant site one of Ireland’s most prominent polluted industrial locations.

  2. 2001

Worker-safety controversies during the final operating years

Several worker deaths occurred between 1999 and 2001. Subsequent reporting and an inquest raised concerns about fire protection, emergency equipment, and the level of investment in safety training at the plant.

  3. 2001

    Closure, debts, and asset-disposal allegations

The plant closed with substantial debts and limited notice. Reports of land and asset sales before closure led to accusations that the owner had stripped assets from the business, while former workers and other creditors remained unpaid.
