    Florence Nagle licensing dispute

The Jockey Club refused to grant training licences to women, leading Florence Nagle to pursue a legal challenge. The Court of Appeal ultimately ruled that the organization could not use its effective monopoly to prevent her from working as a racehorse trainer. Nagle and Norah Wilmot received licences on 3 August 1966. The dispute exposed the exclusionary consequences of the club’s historic authority and contributed to the modernization of British racing.
