  1. 1927

Use of Jukes claims in the wider compulsory-sterilization debate

The Jukes case was cited within the eugenic intellectual and political climate that supported compulsory sterilization in the United States, including arguments associated with Buck v. Bell. Later scholarship regarded this use as scientifically and ethically discredited.

  2. 1916

Eugenic misuse of the Jukes study

Estabrook's hereditarian reinterpretation helped transform a complex and environmentally focused social investigation into an argument for biological determinism. The Jukes label was subsequently used to support eugenic segregation and sterilization, despite serious problems in the underlying family reconstruction and evidence.
