Ziroom, Under Lianjia, Hit by “Formaldehyde Gate”

In August 2018, a tenant said that after moving into a Ziroom apartment they became ill; testing found formaldehyde exceeded the standard, and the tenant alleged that Ziroom’s vacancy period was nominal and that test results had been tampered with. The incident triggered concentrated exposure of formaldehyde problems in long-term rental apartments, and Xinhua published an article asking questions. Beijing municipal housing authorities and other departments interviewed Ziroom and conducted on-site enforcement. Ziroom announced that starting September 1 it would remove all first-time rental listings nationwide and display air test reports; afterward, multiple tenant lawsuits were ruled, and tenants received rent refunds and compensation.
