Maple Lodge Farms fined $500,000 over carbon dioxide worker injury

Maple Lodge Farms, a poultry processing and packaging company, pleaded guilty in the Provincial Offences Court in Brampton and was fined $500,000 plus a 25 per cent victim surcharge after a worker was critically injured by an uncontrolled release of more than 16,000 pounds of carbon dioxide at its Brampton plant on March 16, 2024. An investigation found no carbon dioxide sensor or alarm system was in place and the company failed to take every reasonable precaution to protect workers; the company later installed a permanent carbon dioxide sensor in the area.
