  1. 2017

Suspected source of the European ruthenium-106 release

Radiation-monitoring agencies traced an unusual ruthenium-106 plume to the Volga–Southern Urals region. Investigators considered irradiated-fuel processing or production of a radioactive source as possible causes, while Rosatom and Russian authorities denied that Mayak experienced an accident.

  2. 1957

    Kyshtym disaster and radioactive contamination

A cooling failure caused a high-level radioactive-waste tank to explode, dispersing radioactive material over the eastern Urals. The Soviet government concealed the event for nearly three decades. The accident is generally classified as Level 6 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.

  3. Historical radioactive discharges into the Techa River and Lake Karachay

Early Mayak operations discharged radioactive waste into local water systems, including the Techa River, and used Lake Karachay as a high-level-waste dumping basin. The resulting contamination and incomplete resettlement of affected communities have drawn sustained criticism from environmental advocates.
