Entrusted Unit Illegally Dumped 440 Tons of Sludge; Fined for Coke Oven Flue and Construction Without Approval

In April 2017, media exposed that about 440 tons of reagent-containing sludge from Meishan Iron & Steel had been dumped in the open on site, causing an overwhelming stench. Meishan said it was done without authorization by the entrusted disposal unit; the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Environmental Science intervened in the investigation and environmental authorities filed a case. In 2021, Meishan was fined 41,000 yuan because a coke oven flue bypass damper was opened in a non-emergency state, and was also fined 853,300 yuan for constructing a hot rolling renovation project before receiving EIA approval. It was fined and ordered to clean up and rectify.
