    Melamine detected in infant formula during melamine incident

    In September 2008, during a special inspection of infant formula by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, three batches of Mengniu infant formula were found to contain melamine and were ordered removed from shelves and recalled. Mengniu apologized to consumers, promised to recall the products, suspend production for rectification, and compensate affected children according to national standards. Afterwards, 22 involved companies jointly raised 1.11 billion yuan for a compensation fund, but each company’s share and details of fund use remained undisclosed for a long time, triggering questions. The incident caused a trust crisis in China’s dairy industry, and Mengniu’s infant formula business was hit hard.
