Oxygen Forensics CEO and Russian national charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud over concealed Russian ownership
The U.S. Justice Department charged Lee Reiber, CEO of Virginia-based digital forensics firm Oxygen Forensics, and Russian national Oleg Davydov with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, alleging they hid the company's Russian ownership from the U.S. government for years. Prosecutors allege Davydov and four other Russian nationals secretly owned and controlled Oxygen Forensics through a holding company in Cyprus, and that Reiber signed government paperwork in December 2022 and October 2023 falsely stating the company was independent, which helped it secure a five-year, $12 million contract with a Secret Service training unit in 2024. The company's customers reportedly included the U.S. Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations and the Department of War. Reiber was arrested Sunday in Boise, Idaho, and Davydov was arrested the same day at London's Heathrow Airport. Investigators also seized Oxygen's corporate bank accounts and roughly 57 of its web domains under a warrant issued Sept. 19, and the U.S. Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security is investigating the case. The U.S. Attorney's office noted all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Oxygen Forensics sues former employee Max Weissberg for defamation over Russian-control allegations
Oxygen Forensics sued former employee Max Weissberg for defamation in August 2026 in federal court in Virginia and denied his claims, calling his February YouTube video part of a retaliatory campaign. Weissberg had alleged the company was "secretly controlled" by a Russian firm with "close ties to the Kremlin" and that "100% of the programmers are in Russia." The criminal charges announced in September closely track the claims he made in the video.
