Founders Exit and Brand Declines After Danone Takeover
In 2000, Danone acquired a 92% stake in Robust. In 2001, five founders including He Boquan resigned collectively over strategic differences. Danone narrowed the product line; Robust kept losing money, and its bottled water market share fell from about 30% to about 5%. It was sold by Danone in 2016, becoming a typical case of a “national brand declining after acquisition by foreign capital.”
