PPA controversy: Contac suspended, losses about RMB 600 million
In November 2000, China's drug regulator, because phenylpropanolamine (PPA) may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, required suspension of use and sale of PPA-containing drugs. Sino-American SmithKline immediately stopped selling Contac and Kangde and recalled drugs from channels, with direct losses of about RMB 600 million; in 2001 it launched "New Contac" replacing PPA with PSE, and its crisis PR was regarded as a classic case. Sales suspension and recall.
