Stuff proposes cutting 18 newsroom jobs across six New Zealand regions

New Zealand media brand Stuff has proposed eliminating 18 newsroom jobs across six regions (Taranaki, Manawatū, Wairarapa, Nelson, Timaru and Southland), attributing the proposed restructuring to rising printing and distribution costs and declining newspaper advertising revenue. The proposal includes the loss of four reporters, four visual journalists, five print producers, one designer and four other newsroom positions, while page counts and publication days would remain unchanged. The union E tū warned that smaller teams would struggle to maintain local reporting and questioned Stuff's reliance on AI-assisted Neighbourly News content. The changes remain a proposal with the final outcome yet to be determined.
