    Telunsu OMP Milk Incident

    In February 2009, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine wrote to Mengniu demanding that OMP (bone-building milk protein, whose main component was alleged to contain IGF-1) be prohibited in Telunsu. A Ministry of Health investigation found that OMP had been imported and used without approval and that claims were exaggerated, but that products then on sale posed no health hazard. Mengniu suspended production of OMP milk and belatedly filed applications; products already on the market were not recalled. Experts pointed out multiple flaws in its promotional claims. Telunsu's premium image was severely damaged, becoming another major crisis for the dairy industry after melamine.
