Honor of Kings singled out by state media as 'spiritual opium,' prompting new anti-addiction rules

On August 3, 2021, Xinhua-affiliated Economic Information Daily published the article 'Spiritual Opium' Has Grown into a Hundreds-of-Billions Industry, naming Honor of Kings and other games for causing minors to become addicted, with some children playing 8 hours a day. Tencent's Hong Kong shares fell intraday on the day the article was published. On August 30, the National Press and Publication Administration issued a notice limiting online game companies to providing minors one hour of service only between 20:00 and 21:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and statutory holidays. Tencent introduced stricter minor-protection measures, including real-name authentication, facial-recognition patrols, and parental management tools; game industry license approvals were subsequently suspended for a time.
