Consumer Protection B.C. orders Toledo Credit to pay $34,000 penalty for harassing customers and false statements in debt collection
Consumer Protection B.C. ordered Surrey consumer lender and debt collection company Toledo Credit to pay a $34,000 penalty after finding it harassed customers and made false and misleading statements while collecting overdue debts, including threats of 'financial annihilation', 'reputational destruction', RCMP involvement, CRA audits, blacklisting and bailiff visits. The regulator found the company falsely claimed such actions had been initiated or were imminent. Toledo said it did not intend to harass or mislead debtors, said it would appoint a dedicated collections manager and review its processes and escalation controls, and is reviewing the decision; it has until Oct. 26 to seek reconsideration.
