Sponge city concept questioned as controversy escalates after Zhengzhou floods

Yu Kongjian, founder of Turenscape, strongly promotes replacing hardened river channels and levees with “green sponges” such as wetlands and ponds; critics argue that his plan underestimates the engineering risks of extreme floods and that sponge cities have become image projects; after Zhengzhou’s “7·20” rainstorm in 2021, doubts intensified, and Yu responded that Zhengzhou was not a true sponge city.
