Australian court fines makers of Voltaren Osteo Gel
The Federal Court ordered Novartis Consumer Health Australasia and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Australia to pay a $4.5 million fine for breaches of Australian Consumer Law. The court found that Voltaren Osteo Gel had been marketed as more specifically formulated and more effective than Emulgel, although the products were essentially the same and equally effective.

The Federal Court ordered GlaxoSmithKline to pay $1.5 million and Novartis to pay $3 million after the companies admitted breaching Australian consumer law through their marketing of Osteo Gel between 2012 and 2017. The court found that the marketing misled consumers about the product's effectiveness compared with Emulgel.
