NBA working with Wilson on 'smart basketball' that could be used in games as soon as 2027
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a CNBC interview published on October 11, 2026 that the league is working with official basketball manufacturer Wilson to develop a "smart basketball" containing a tiny microchip Bluetooth sensor that can track movement, spin and changes in trajectory. The technology has already been tested in the NBA's G League, Summer League and some preseason games, and Silver said it could be used for officiating in NBA games as soon as next year (2027), while a consumer version is a few years away.
