Overview
Migu Reading (Chinese: 咪咕阅读; also known by its domain CMRead) is a Chinese digital reading platform operated within Migu, the digital content subsidiary of China Mobile. It distributes e-books, web novels, comics and audio books to readers, primarily through mobile apps and the web, and is closely tied to China Mobile's subscriber base and billing ecosystem. The platform is part of Migu's broader portfolio of digital media services, which spans music, video, reading and gaming. As a carrier-affiliated reading service, Migu Reading competes in China's crowded online literature market alongside dedicated web-novel platforms and the reading apps of major internet companies. Its differentiation rests on integration with China Mobile's network, bundled data and membership offerings, and a catalogue that mixes licensed trade publishing with serialized online fiction and audio adaptations. The brand is best understood as a product brand within a larger state-owned telecommunications group rather than an independent publisher. Its operations, content partnerships and pricing are shaped by China Mobile's strategy for digital content and by the regulatory environment for online publishing and literature in China.
History
Migu Reading is a digital reading service within Migu, the digital content arm of China Mobile. Migu was established by China Mobile to consolidate its consumer digital media businesses, including music, video, reading and gaming, under a single brand. Within that structure, Migu Reading (CMRead) serves as the reading-focused platform, distributing e-books, web novels and audio content to mobile users. The service grew alongside the broader expansion of mobile internet reading in China, where smartphone apps became a primary channel for both trade e-books and serialized online literature. Being part of China Mobile gave the platform access to a very large subscriber base and to carrier billing and data-bundle integration, which are important levers for reader acquisition and monetization in the Chinese market. Over time, Migu Reading has positioned itself within the competitive online literature landscape, working with publishers and content providers while also featuring serialized fiction and audio adaptations. Its development is closely tied to China Mobile's digital content strategy and to the regulatory framework governing online publishing and literature in China.

Migu Reading summoned by National Press and Publication Administration over vulgar online literature, ordered comprehensive rectification
From July 15 to 17, 2019, the National Press and Publication Administration summoned Migu Reading and 11 other online literature companies with vulgar-content issues, ordering them to immediately remove problematic works, suspend related writing contests, clean up vulgar promotional content, and improve content review mechanisms. Impact and handling: half a year after the regulatory talk, China Economic Net reported that Migu Reading's audiobook section still contained 'domineering CEO'-type suspected harmful content, and the rectification effect was questioned; in addition, Migu was ordered to pay RMB 80,000 in a copyright dispute for disseminating infringing works. Status: regulatory measures. Entity involved: Migu Digital Media Co., Ltd. (Migu Reading). Scope: Migu Reading's online literature and audiobook content.
