Overview

Shineway Pharmaceutical Group (神威药业) is a China-based pharmaceutical enterprise whose core business is the research, development, manufacturing, and marketing of modernized traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) products. The company is best known for its TCM injections, soft capsules, and granules, and it operates one of the larger modern TCM production platforms in northern China. Its product portfolio spans cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, respiratory, and anti-infective categories, with flagship brands such as Shuxuening injection and Huoxue Tongmai capsules. Founded in the early 1990s in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, Shineway grew alongside China's reform-era pharmaceutical industry and became a publicly listed company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The group integrates cultivation of medicinal herbs, extraction, formulation, and distribution, and it has invested in GMP-compliant manufacturing facilities. Its TCM injection business has been both a growth driver and a regulatory focus, as China tightened oversight of injectable TCM products in the 2010s. Shineway markets its products primarily in mainland China through hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies, supported by a nationwide sales network. The company positions itself at the intersection of traditional Chinese medicine heritage and modern pharmaceutical standards, emphasizing quality control, standardization, and evidence-based development of TCM formulations. It is a recognizable name in the Chinese consumer-health and TCM sector, though it faces competition from both large integrated pharma groups and specialized TCM producers.

History

Shineway Pharmaceutical Group was established in 1992 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, during a period when China's pharmaceutical sector was expanding rapidly under market reforms. The company focused from the outset on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but with an industrial, modernized approach: standardized extraction, modern dosage forms, and large-scale manufacturing rather than small-batch traditional preparation. In its early years, Shineway built a portfolio around TCM injections and soft capsules, categories that were growing in Chinese hospitals. TCM injections such as Shuxuening and Qingkailing became important products, used in cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and anti-infective treatment. The company invested in GMP-compliant plants and in a sales network covering hospitals and pharmacies across China. Shineway later listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, giving it access to international capital and raising its profile. The group expanded its production capacity and diversified into granules, tablets, and oral liquids, while continuing to emphasize TCM injections as a core competency. It also developed herb cultivation and extraction capabilities to control raw material quality. During the 2010s, Chinese regulators increased scrutiny of TCM injections following safety concerns, requiring stricter clinical evidence and quality controls. This affected the entire TCM injection segment, including Shineway, and pushed the company to strengthen research, standardization, and pharmacovigilance. Shineway responded by investing in evidence-based studies and modernizing its manufacturing. Today, Shineway Pharmaceutical Group remains an active player in China's TCM industry, with a portfolio spanning injections, soft capsules, granules, and other formulations. It continues to position itself as a modernizer of traditional medicine, balancing heritage formulas with contemporary pharmaceutical standards.

Lianbizhi Injection registration revoked over kidney injury risk; formula granules fail spot check

Lianbizhi Injection had previously been warned that it might cause acute kidney injury; in 2022 the National Medical Products Administration decided, based on post-marketing evaluation, to stop its production, sale and use and to cancel its drug registration certificate, with Shineway Pharmaceutical among the companies involved. In 2023 a batch of Shineway's fried sour jujube seed formula granules failed the microbial limit and was announced. Production and use of Lianbizhi were stopped; the non-compliant batch was ordered to be suspended from sale and recalled.
