Overview

The 48th Operations Group (48 OG) is a United States Air Force operational flying group assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing, United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, and based at RAF Lakenheath in England. It provides fighter forces, operational planning, aircrew support, and expeditionary capability for United States European Command, United States Africa Command, NATO, and worldwide contingency operations. Its current aircraft mix includes F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning IIs, supported by an operations support squadron and fighter squadrons known by longstanding nicknames including the Madhatters, Grim Reapers, Panthers, and Valkyries. The group's institutional lineage reaches back to the 48th Bombardment Group, activated in January 1941 for light-bomber training. During the Second World War it transitioned into a fighter-bomber and then fighter group, trained with several American aircraft types, and deployed to England in 1944 with P-47 Thunderbolts. It flew combat during the Normandy invasion and the Allied advance through France, Belgium, and Germany, receiving a Distinguished Unit Citation for operations near Jülich and recognition in Belgium's Order of the Day. The wartime group was inactivated in November 1945. The lineage was revived during the Cold War when the 48th Fighter-Bomber Group was reactivated at Chaumont Air Base, France, in 1952. It operated F-84G Thunderjets, F-86F Sabres, and later F-100 Super Sabres in support of USAFE and NATO, including exercises, readiness evaluations, and overseas training deployments. The group was inactivated in December 1957 when its squadrons were assigned directly to the wing under the Air Force's tri-deputate organization. The present-day operations group was activated on 31 March 1992 under the objective-wing structure and inherited the history and honors of the earlier formations. Initially associated with the 48th Wing's F-111F force, it transitioned during the 1990s to F-15E and F-15C/D operations. Its squadrons subsequently supported enforcement and combat operations in Iraq, the Balkans, and Southwest Asia. In 2021, the 495th Fighter Squadron was reactivated as the Air Force's first overseas-based F-35A squadron, adding a fifth-generation fighter capability to the group's established F-15 mission. The group is an operational military formation rather than a commercial consumer brand; its identity is expressed through lineage, aircraft, unit insignia, squadron traditions, and expeditionary service.

History

The unit's lineage began on 15 January 1941, when the United States Army Air Corps activated the 48th Bombardment Group (Light) at Hunter Field, Georgia. Its early mission was training with light and dive-bomber aircraft, including the A-20 Havoc, B-18 Bolo, A-24, A-31, A-35, and A-36. The formation moved among training bases in Georgia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. In August 1943 it became the 48th Fighter-Bomber Group, with its flying squadrons redesignated as the 492d, 493d, 494th, and 495th Fighter-Bomber Squadrons. It trained with the P-39 Airacobra and P-40 Warhawk before moving to South Carolina to prepare for combat with the P-47 Thunderbolt. The group sailed for Europe aboard RMS Queen Mary in March 1944 and joined the Ninth Air Force at RAF Ibsley. Its first combat mission took place on 20 April 1944. On D-Day and during the Normandy campaign, its aircraft attacked bridges, railways, trains, gun positions, and other targets while also conducting reconnaissance. The group flew nearly 2,000 sorties during the campaign. It then moved through advanced landing grounds in France as Allied forces advanced toward Germany. A December 1944 attack near Jülich, conducted in poor weather and under intense opposition, earned the group a Distinguished Unit Citation. After Germany's surrender, it returned to the United States and was inactivated on 7 November 1945. The group returned to active service on 10 July 1952 at Chaumont Air Base, France, as the 48th Fighter-Bomber Group. It inherited aircraft and personnel from the federalized Oklahoma Air National Guard's 137th Fighter-Bomber Group. The group supported USAFE and NATO with F-84G Thunderjets, participated in exercises and readiness evaluations, and deployed to Wheelus Air Base in Libya for bombing and gunnery training. In 1953 it assumed the Skyblazers European aerial demonstration mission, later transitioning to F-86F Sabres. The wing converted to F-100 Super Sabres in the late 1950s, but the group was inactivated on 8 December 1957 when the Air Force assigned the component squadrons directly to the wing. The modern 48th Operations Group was activated on 31 March 1992. It inherited the lineage of its predecessor organizations and initially operated in the 48th Wing's F-111F environment. During the early 1990s the group transitioned to F-15E Strike Eagles and later restored the 493d Fighter Squadron with F-15C/D aircraft. Its post-Cold War operations included deployments to Turkey and Italy for Operation Provide Comfort, Operation Northern Watch, and Operation Deny Flight. During Operation Allied Force in 1999, the group's squadrons flew from England, Italy, and other expeditionary locations, conducting air-superiority and precision-strike missions. The 494th used precision-guided weapons, including the first combat employment of a GBU-28 by an Air Force F-15E, according to the referenced unit history. The group also supported Operation Southern Watch in Southwest Asia and post-11 September 2001 operations, including air-superiority and humanitarian-airlift support connected with Operation Enduring Freedom. In the twenty-first century it continued NATO exercises, inspections, readiness activity, and expeditionary commitments while modernizing its aircraft. The 495th Fighter Squadron was reactivated on 1 October 2021 as an F-35A unit, making the group a mixed-generation fighter formation based around F-15E and F-35A operations.
