Overview

AB Elektronik GmbH is a German automotive supplier based in Werne, North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded in 1967 as a sales office for AB Electronic Ltd. of the United Kingdom, the company evolved into a specialist manufacturer of customer-specific electromechanical products. Its portfolio includes acoustic signal transmitters, dimmers, headlamp leveling controls, speed sensors, input elements, accelerator pedal modules, level sensors, temperature sensors, and angle sensors. These products are supplied to automotive manufacturers and system partners. The company entered the automotive industry in 1976, producing dimmers and speed sensors, and later pioneered contactless accelerator pedals in 1997. It expanded with a second plant in Werne in 1987 and a plant in Klingenberg near Dresden in 1991. In 1993, the British TT Group PLC (renamed TT electronics plc in 2001) acquired the parent company. AB Elektronik remained part of TT electronics until 1 October 2017, when it was acquired by the American AVX Corporation. In 2021, AVX Corporation and Kyocera Corporation combined their synergies under the Kyocera AVX brand. Consequently, on 1 October 2021, the company was renamed KYOCERA AVX Components (Werne) GmbH. Today, the Werne site serves as the competence center for position and speed sensor technology and accelerator pedal modules within the Sensing and Control Division of KYOCERA AVX. It develops and manufactures for renowned automotive manufacturers and system partners. In 2022, the company celebrated 55 years at its Werne location on the Lippe river.

History

AB Elektronik was founded in 1967 as a sales office of AB Electronic Ltd., Great Britain. In the following year, it began manufacturing rotary resistors and rotary switches for the entertainment industry. In 1974, it entered the industrial electronics market. In 1976, the company entered the automotive industry, for which it is known today, producing dimmers and speed sensors. In 1981, an electronics laboratory was established. In 1982, it was certified by the VDE according to CEDD. In 1987, Plant II was opened in Wahrbrink (Werne), followed in 1991 by the Sachsen plant in Klingenberg near Dresden. In 1993, the TT Group PLC (renamed TT electronics plc in 2001) acquired the parent company. Further certifications followed in 1994 (DIN ISO (EN 29001)), 1998 (QS 9000 VDA 6.1), and 2002 (ISO/TS 16949). In 1997, production of contactless accelerator pedals began. A first outsourcing took place in 2002 with the founding of AB Elektronik Ukraine in Kiev. Due to the global economic crisis, short-time work was introduced in 2009, and it was announced that 225 of 750 employees at the Werne plant would be laid off. In early January 2014, the group announced that production in Werne would be closed and relocated abroad, with only research and development remaining at the Werne site. On 1 October 2017, AB Elektronik was acquired by the American AVX Corporation from TT electronics. On 1 April 2021, AVX Corporation (parent company of AB Elektronik GmbH) together with Kyocera Corporation announced that existing synergies would be bundled under a common brand called Kyocera AVX. In this process, all companies received new names and a common trademark. Since 1 October 2021, the company is named KYOCERA AVX Components (Werne) GmbH. In 2022, the company celebrated 55 years at its Werne an der Lippe location and serves as the competence center for position and speed sensor technology and accelerator pedal modules of the Sensing and Control Division of KYOCERA AVX. The site develops and produces for renowned automotive manufacturers and system partners.
