Overview

Accor is a French multinational hospitality group headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris. Its hotel business began in 1967 when Paul Dubrule and Gérard Pélisson opened the first Novotel outside Lille. From that initial standardized hotel concept, the company developed into a global multi-brand hospitality operator with activities in hotel ownership, management, franchising, loyalty, digital hospitality, restaurants, events and selected forms of alternative accommodation. The group’s portfolio spans several price and experience segments. Economy and midscale brands include ibis, ibis Styles, ibis budget, Novotel, Mercure, Adagio and hotelF1. Premium and luxury brands include Pullman, Swissôtel, Mövenpick, Sofitel, MGallery, Fairmont, Raffles and Orient Express. Through its Ennismore business, Accor also participates in lifestyle hospitality, with brands such as The Hoxton, 25hours, Delano, Mondrian, Mama Shelter, SLS, Hyde, SO/ and Tribe. The portfolio is designed to serve different customer needs, including business travel, family trips, city breaks, long stays, meetings, resorts, luxury travel and culturally distinctive accommodation. Accor expanded through organic development and acquisitions. Important stages included the launch of ibis in 1974, the acquisition of Mercure and Sofitel, the 1983 merger that created the Accor group, the purchase of Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn in the United States, the development of Pullman and Adagio, and the acquisitions of FRHI Hotels & Resorts, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts, Mantra Group and lifestyle hospitality assets. The company progressively moved toward an asset-light model, placing greater emphasis on brand ownership, hotel management contracts, franchising, distribution and services for hotel owners. Its former HotelInvest property division was separated and partially sold to create AccorInvest. Accor’s customer ecosystem is centered on ALL – Accor Live Limitless, a loyalty and booking platform introduced in 2019 through the combination of the Accor and Le Club AccorHotels identities. ALL provides hotel benefits, rewards and access to partner experiences in areas such as travel, entertainment, dining and sport. The group also owns or operates hospitality-related businesses including D-Edge, ResDiary, onefinestay, John Paul, Potel & Chabot and Paris Society, although the scope and ownership of these activities has changed over time. Accor operates internationally through a combination of owned, managed and franchised properties. Europe remains its historical base, while the group has developed extensive networks in Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. In 2023, it organized its activities into two principal business units: Economy, Midscale & Premium, and Luxury & Lifestyle. The latter is structured around collections associated with Raffles and Orient Express, Fairmont, Sofitel and MGallery, and Ennismore. Accor remains an active public company listed in Paris and is one of the world’s largest hotel groups by geographic reach and room capacity.

History

Accor traces its origins to 1967, when Paul Dubrule and Gérard Pélisson founded Société d’investissement et d’exploitation hôteliers, or SIEH, and opened the first Novotel near Lille in northern France. The concept used standardized construction and operating practices to offer reliable accommodation to business and mainstream travelers. In 1974, the founders launched ibis in Bordeaux as a more economical hotel format. The company expanded its portfolio in the following years by acquiring Courtepaille and Mercure in 1975 and Sofitel in 1980. Its international development began with the opening of a Novotel in Singapore in 1981. In 1983, SIEH merged with Jacques Borel International. The combined company became Accor and was introduced to the Paris stock exchange. During the 1980s, Accor broadened its activities beyond conventional hotels. It acquired the Quiberon thalassotherapy center, later associated with Thalasso Sea & Spa, acquired the fine-catering company Lenôtre and launched Formule 1, a low-cost hotel format based partly on modular construction. In the early 1990s, the group expanded in North America through the acquisition of Motel 6 and acquired Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, bringing Pullman-related hotel activities and other travel businesses into the group. The 1990s brought both geographic expansion and a strategic shift. Accor developed economy brands such as Etap Hotel and acquired Red Roof Inn in the United States. At the same time, management increasingly sought a broader presence in premium and luxury hospitality. The group also developed casino, restaurant and travel-related activities and expanded in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Some of these non-hotel activities were subsequently sold, separated or reorganized as Accor concentrated more heavily on hospitality brands, hotel management and franchising. During the 2000s, Accor pursued a more differentiated brand architecture. It launched SuiteHotel, created Adagio in partnership with Pierre & Vacances, relaunched Pullman as a premium brand, introduced MGallery as a collection of distinctive upscale hotels and developed All Seasons, later incorporated into ibis Styles. In 2010, the company separated its hotel operations from its voucher-services business; the latter became Edenred. SuiteHotel was later integrated with Novotel. In 2013, Accor organized the business around HotelServices, which operated and franchised hotels, and HotelInvest, which owned or invested in hotel assets. Sébastien Bazin became chairman and chief executive officer that year. The 2010s were marked by acquisitions and the growth of lifestyle and luxury hospitality. Accor acquired interests in Mama Shelter, established a strategic alliance with Huazhu in China, bought or invested in John Paul, onefinestay, Gekko, VeryChic, Potel & Chabot and event businesses, and acquired or partnered with brands including FRHI Hotels & Resorts, Mantra, Mövenpick, Orient Express and SBE-related businesses. The 2015 purchase of FRHI added Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel to the portfolio. In 2018, Accor sold a majority stake in HotelInvest, creating AccorInvest as a separate property-owning platform, and took control of Orbis. Accor introduced the ALL loyalty and experiences platform in 2019. The group also created D-Edge by combining hotel digital-marketing businesses and launched or expanded brands such as Tribe and greet. During the COVID-19 crisis, Accor established CEDA to coordinate accommodation for healthcare workers and vulnerable people, created the ALL Heartist Fund for employees and individual partners facing severe financial hardship, and introduced enhanced hygiene and medical-assistance measures through partnerships with Bureau Veritas and AXA. After the pandemic, Accor continued to emphasize asset-light growth, lifestyle hospitality and experiences. It established Accor Acquisition Company as a special-purpose investment vehicle, invested in hospitality technology and Indian hotel businesses, finalized the Ennismore joint venture and developed projects involving Orient Express hotels, trains, cruises and other forms of luxury travel. In 2023, the company reorganized into Economy, Midscale & Premium and Luxury & Lifestyle divisions. Later developments included the Orient Express partnership with LVMH, expansion with InterGlobe in India, cultural-heritage work with the World Monuments Fund and Accor’s reported entry into Las Vegas through a franchise arrangement for Treasure Island. The company continues to operate as a publicly listed global hospitality group with a portfolio extending from budget accommodation to luxury hotels, resorts, residences and lifestyle venues.
