Overview

ACCRI — the Associazione di cooperazione cristiana internazionale (International Christian Cooperation Association) — is an Italian non-governmental organisation (NGO) established on 4 May 1987 and recognised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for international cooperation. It is headquartered in Italy, with two offices in the cities of Trento and Trieste, and operates in connection with the dioceses of those two cities. ACCRI is a member of FOCSIV, the Federation of Christian Organisations for International Voluntary Service. The organisation works in a logic of "peer-to-peer" partnership with other NGOs and organisations in the Global South. All ACCRI projects are agreed with local partners and are aimed at promoting self-development, empowerment and the participation of beneficiaries and local NGOs. Its work spans vocational training for working youth, agriculture, recovery of youth in difficult situations, organisational support and institutional strengthening, water resource management and environmental protection, and the prevention and treatment of alcoholism. ACCRI is currently present in Africa (Chad and Kenya) and Latin America (Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile). Its projects include support for the socio-economic self-development of the farming population of Gagal-Keuni in Chad; vocational training and social promotion for working youth in Babahoyo, Ecuador; agricultural development and training for campesinos in Pueblo Viejo and Baba, Ecuador; introduction of the Hudolin ecological-social model for alcohol and other addiction problems and a study centre at CRATE in Talca, Chile; education and psychosocial recovery of children and young people at Hogar Padre Hurtado in Talca, Chile; development of sustainable family farming systems in Mataquito, Chile; and integrated management of the S. Isidro basin in Comarapa, Bolivia. Beyond field projects, ACCRI runs training programmes for international cooperation and volunteering, including introductory meetings, a residential week, psychological orientation and project-specific training. It is active in development education in schools and on the territory, producing intercultural teaching tools, seminars, exhibitions and cultural events, and it co-publishes the monthly magazine Volontari per lo Sviluppo (VPS). Its resource centre, the "Biblioteca del Mondo", provides books, DVDs, CDs, magazines and dossiers on international cooperation, peace, human rights, interculturality and solidarity. In 2005 the association received the FOCSIV volunteering Oscar.

History

ACCRI, the Associazione di cooperazione cristiana internazionale, was constituted on 4 May 1987 and is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for international cooperation. It operates in connection with the dioceses of Trento and Trieste, the two Italian cities where it maintains offices. The organisation adheres to FOCSIV, the Federation of Christian Organisations for International Voluntary Service. From its foundation, ACCRI has worked in a logic of "peer-to-peer" partnership with other NGOs and organisations in the Global South. All projects are agreed with local partners and are aimed at promoting self-development, empowerment and the participation of beneficiaries and local NGOs. In 2005 the association received the FOCSIV volunteering Oscar. Over the years ACCRI has been present in Africa (Chad and Kenya) and Latin America (Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile). Its project portfolio has included support for the socio-economic self-development of the farming population of Gagal-Keuni in Chad; vocational training and social promotion for working youth in Babahoyo, Ecuador; agricultural development and training for campesinos in Pueblo Viejo and Baba, Ecuador; introduction of the Hudolin ecological-social model for alcohol and other addiction problems and a study centre at CRATE in Talca, Chile; education and psychosocial recovery of children and young people at Hogar Padre Hurtado in Talca, Chile; development of sustainable family farming systems in Mataquito, Chile; and integrated management of the S. Isidro basin in Comarapa, Bolivia. Alongside its field work, ACCRI has developed a training programme for cooperation and international volunteering, offered annually to those who wish to serve in the North or the South of the world. The programme includes introductory meetings on general themes of cooperation and volunteering, a residential week for deeper reflection on personal motivations and relational dynamics, psychological orientation, and specific training for the project in which the volunteer will work. International volunteering is proposed especially to young people, asking them to commit two or three years of their lives to a cooperation project alongside communities in the South and, on returning home, to work to change the culture that favours or creates imbalances and dependencies of poor countries. ACCRI is also active in development education in schools and on the territory, designing and producing intercultural teaching tools to inform and raise awareness about encounter and integration, the international mechanisms that cause impoverishment, exclusion, environmental destruction and human rights violations. It promotes information and training seminars for active and supportive citizenship (for example the project "Da Frontiere a Ponti"), organises exhibitions, round tables and cultural events in collaboration with partners in the South, and supports campaigns that seek to overcome national and international economic policies that create dependency or subservience. It collaborates actively in networks with other associations, communities and local bodies in both the South and the North. Its resource centre, the "Biblioteca del Mondo", provides books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, videocassettes and dossiers on international cooperation, peace, human rights, interculturality, solidarity and other cultures. ACCRI is also a co-publisher of the monthly magazine Volontari per lo Sviluppo (VPS).
