Overview

Acer is a Taiwan-based multinational technology brand founded in 1976 by Stan Shih and others. Its early activities were associated with microprocessor technology, computer products, and related distribution and services. The company later expanded into a global personal-computing brand with products spanning computers, displays, projectors, and other digital devices. Personal computers remain central to Acer's business. Its portfolio serves consumers, gamers, creative professionals, schools, and business customers, covering everyday computing, thin-and-light notebooks, gaming systems, and commercial devices. Predator is associated with gaming and high-performance hardware, while Swift, Aspire, and TravelMate address thin-and-light, mainstream consumer, and business-use scenarios respectively. Acer also offers monitors, projectors, gaming accessories, and computer peripherals under Acer and related product lines. The brand sells in multiple international markets through retail, e-commerce, distributors, and enterprise channels. Acer has also undertaken organizational and business-structure changes over time, separating parts of manufacturing and non-core activities from brand, product-planning, and channel operations. Its current positioning centers on personal computing, gaming hardware, displays, and technology products for education and commercial users. Product availability varies by market and changes over time, so regional Acer websites remain the most reliable reference for current offerings.

History

Acer was established in 1976 in Taiwan, initially operating in areas related to electronics and computing technology. As the personal-computer industry expanded, the company broadened its computer portfolio, brand operations, and international sales network, developing distribution and service channels in overseas markets. Personal computers became the foundation of Acer's business. The company expanded from notebooks and desktop computers into monitors, projectors, servers, and other digital products, serving households, students, businesses, and professional users. It later strengthened its presence in gaming and high-performance computing through product lines such as Predator, including gaming computers and displays. Over its development, Acer undertook organizational and business-structure changes and separated parts of manufacturing, contract production, or non-core activities from brand management and product planning. The company subsequently continued to center its business on personal computing while also developing gaming, display, education-technology, and commercial-solution offerings. Acer remains active internationally, although its product mix and strategic emphasis vary by market and year.
