Acta Onomastica is a Czech linguistic journal devoted to onomastics, the study of proper names. It is published twice a year by the Institute of the Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Ústav pro jazyk český Akademie věd České republiky). It is the only onomastic journal in the Czech Republic and is highly regarded by Czech and international scholars. The journal was founded in 1960 by Vladimír Šmilauer and Jan Svoboda. Over its history it has appeared under several titles: Zpravodaj Místopisné komise ČSAV (1960–1982), Onomastický zpravodaj ČSAV (1983–1992), Onomastický zpravodaj (1993–1994), and since volume 36 (1995) it has carried its current name, Acta Onomastica. The journal is indexed in international databases including SCOPUS, ERIH+, CEJSH, and EBSCO. Its editorial leadership has included Vladimír Šmilauer (until 1983), Miloslava Knappová (from 1984), Libuše Olivová-Nezbedová (1993–2003), Milan Harvalík (2004–2017), and Pavel Štěpán (since 2017). The journal publishes original research, reviews, and reports on place names, personal names, and other categories of proper names, with a focus on Czech and Slavic material but also covering broader European and general onomastic topics. It serves as a key venue for onomastic research in Central Europe and maintains an international readership.
